John Kinder
John was baptised on 28 September 1851 at St Mark’s Church of England[1].  He may have been born in Huddersfield, Cheshire according to the 1861 UK Census[2].

Almost nothing is known of John early life.    In 1861 he was living with his parents at 20 Wharf Street, Dukinfield aged 9 years and was a Scholar.

In 1871 John was 19 years old and worked as a Coal Miner.  He lived at his parents' home at 123 Astley Street in Dukinfield[3].

Ellen Buttery
Ellen was born in Dawley, Shropshire, England and baptised on 28 September 1855 at Malinslee, Shropshire[14,15].  Her parents were George and Eliza Buttery.  George worked as a Stone-miner[15].  Ellen had at least, 4 siblings - George, William, Edward and Herbert all born in Dawley[15].  Ellen worked at Home Domestic duties.

Dawley lies in the heart of the Coalbrookdale or East Shropshire coalfields.


Perhaps John went looking for work in this area and there met Ellen?

John and Ellen Buttery were married on 7 December 1874 at St Stephen's, Audenshaw, Lancashire[7,8].  Their marriage entry stated that they both lived in Audenshaw at the time.

Marriage and later life
In 1881, John and Ellen were living at 19 Danty Street, Dukinfield.  John was noted as a Coalminer, aged 29 years.  Ellen was aged 27 years old[4].

By 1891, John and Ellen had moved to 136 Chapel Street, Dukinfield.  John was still mining coal and their second daughter, Julie Ellen (or Julia), was noted as being 6 months old.  She was born in late 1890 in Dukindield[11].

John appeared on the 1899/1900 Burgess Roll for Dukinfield and was living at 136 Chapel Street.

The 1901 UK Census finds John, Ellen and Julie Ellen (now aged 10 years) still living at 136 Chapel Street[6].  John’s occupation was again stated as Coalminer.

The 1911 UK Census has John, Ellen and Julia Ellen (now 20 years old) alive and well at living at 136 Chapel Street, Dukinfield[13].  John was still working as a Coal Miner Hewer.  Julia Ellen was single and worked as a Dressmaker.

Nothing further is known of John and Ellen




John and Ellen's Children:-

1.  Eliza Ann Kinder was born in 1875 in Dukinfield and baptised on 29 August 1875 at St Mark's, Dukinfield[1,10].  Eliza Ann died in 1879 aged only 4 years.  She was buried at the Dukinfield Cemetery on 2 August 1879 in grave B3-475, 3077-P[9,12].

2.  Julia (or Julie) Ellen Kinder was born in 1890 in Dukinfield[11].  We know that she was alive in 1911 and living with her parents at 136 Chapel Street, Dukinfield.  Julia Ellen was single and worked as a Dressmaker[13].
