Joseph's Early Life in Dukinfield
Joseph was born in 1848[16]. According to the 1851 Census, he was 2 years of age and living
with his parents, John and Ann, in Davi(e)s Street, Dukinfield[1].

In 1861, Joseph, then 12 years old, worked as a S--na Hawker[2]. He and his family
were then living at 20 Wharf Street, Dukinfield. His father, John, was operating a Beer
Shop - probably the same one that he took over after the death of his mother, Mary Rider.

According to the 1871 Census, Joseph, then aged 22 years, was living at
at the home of Susannah Dingle at 10 Railway Street, Dukinfield.
He was one of several lodgers. He worked as a Labourer in Iron Works[9].

Alice Hurst Alice was born
in ca 1852 in Waterloo, Lancashire[2].
Alice's parents were Henry and Ellen
Hurst and that family lived at 93 Oxford Road, Dukinfield according to the
1861 and 1871 Censes[10,11]. In 1871, Alice worked as a Factory Hand in a Cotton Mill[11].
Henry Hurst worked as a Miner in 1872[17].
Alice's nirth place is a little unclear. In the 1861 census it is
stated as Waterloo, Lancashire. In 1871 it is
Ashton-under-Lyne. In 1881 and 1891 it is Dukinfield and in 1901
it is Waterloo, Ashton-under-Lyne[10,11,3,4,5]. Still need to find her baptism and birth records.
Joseph And Alice Hurst Are Married
Joseph married Alice Hurst at St Peter’s Church
in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire in 1872[17]. Joseph worked as a Striker.

Together, Joseph and Alice had three daughters and one son – Elizabeth, Sarah Ellen, Bertha and
Percy.
According to the 1881 Census,
the family was living at 3 Dain Street (off Oxford Road) in Dukinfield[3]. Their surname was
incorrectly spelled Kynder.
Joseph was then aged 32 years and Alice was aged 29 years.
Their children – Elizabeth was aged 8 years, Sarah
Ellen 4 years and Bertha was 1 year old. All are stated to
have been born in Dukinfield. Joseph was still doing heavy work -
a Striker at an ironworks.

In 1891, Joseph and Alice were
living at 10 Kay Street, Dukinfield[4]. Joseph was working as a Smith’s Striker.
Their three daughters – Elizabeth, Sarah Ellen and Bertha were all living with
them.

Joseph's Death
Joseph died in August
1896, aged just 48 years, and was buried on 12 August 1896 at the Dukinfield Cemetery
in grave ref: A4-124 4167-P[6]. He was still living at 10 Kay Street when he
died. His occupation was registered as Blacksmith’s Striker.
Alice Moved On
The 1901 UK Census shows, Alice Hurst,
Sarah Ellen and Bertha still living at 10 Kay Street[5].

In 1902, Alice Hurst married Samuel
Walmsley at Christ Church, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire[7]. She would have been
approximately 50 years of age. Interestingly, a son of Samuel’s, Alfred
Hilton Walmsley, also married a Kinder – Ruth whose parents were William
Henry Kinder and Ellen Ann[reference?]. No relationship between these Kinder families has
yet been established.
Alice Hurst,
now Alice Walmsley, was buried in the same grave as Joseph Kinder on 5 January 1912, aged 60
years and noted as being married, and last living at 73 Cecil Street,
Dukinfield.

1. Elizabeth (b 1872)
Elizabeth was baptised on 15 September 1872 at St
John’s Church of England, Dukinfield[8].
In 1891 Elizabeth, at 18 years of age, worked
as a Cotton Frame Tenter
in a cotton mill. (This job which involved stretching the
cloth across the frame of the machine while it was drying.).
She married John Hopwood on 15 February 1895 at St John’s Church of
England, Dukinfield[8]. She stated her address as 10 Kay Street, Dukinfield.

In 1901, John, Elizabeth and their two daughters, Hannah and Alice, were
living at 48 Rectory Road, Hanley, Staffordshire[13]. John Hopwood
was working as a Superintendent Insurance Company.
2. Sarah Ellen (b 1877)
Sarah Ellen was born on 2 January 1877 and baptised
on 4 February 1877 at St John’s Chapel, Dukinfield[8].
In 1891 Sarah Ellen, at 14 years of age worked
as a Cotton Frame Tenter
in a cotton mill. (This job which involved stretching the
cloth across the frame of the machine while it was drying.).
The 1901 UK Census shows
Sarah Ellen still living at 10 Kay Street[5]. She was then 24 years old, was not married and her occupation was stated as Cotton Card Room Hand.
She married Arnold Ashton in 1902 at St
John’s Church of England[8].
In
1911, Sarah Ellen and Arnold lived at 75 Cecil Street, Dukinfield.
On the evening of the census, Sarah Ellen's sister, Bertha, was
there, as well as Sarah Ellen's mother, Alice (now Walmsley)[12]. Arnold worked as a Wages Clerk at a sewing machine works and Sarah Ellen worked as a Cotton Frame Tenter in a cotton mill.

In the 1911 Census, after 8 years of marriage, Arnold and Sarah
Ellen report no children (living or dead). It is likely they never had
any.
Sarah Ellen died in December 1949 was buried on 17 December
1949, aged 74 years and noted as being married and last living at 74
Pickford Lane, Dukinfield. She lies in Dukinfield Cemetery in
grave ref: A4-422[6].
Arnold Ashton was buried on 4 August
1950 at the Dukinfield Cemetery in the same grave as Sarah Ellen[6]. He was aged 75 years when he passed away. His last occupation is noted as
Clerk and was last living at 74 Pickford Lane, Dukinfield.
3. Bertha (b 1880)
Bertha was
baptised on 2 May 1880 at St John’s Church of England, Dukinfield[8].
In 1891, Bertha then aged 11 years was probably still at school, although not for
much longer. It was common in those times, for children to begin
working at about 12 years of age. The 1901 UK Census shows Bertha living at 10 Kay Street[5]. Bertha
was then 21 years old, was also not married and worked as a Cotton Weaver.
She was 31 years old in the 1911 UK Census unmarried and staying with her older sister, Sarah Ellen (Ashton)[12]. She worked as a Cotton Cloth Weaver in a cotton mill.
Percy (b 22 Dec 1885[15]) Percy was baptised on 1
February 1885 at St John’s Church of England, Dukinfield[8]. Percy died aged only 9 weeks and was buried on
26 February at the Dukinfield Cemetery in grave ref: grave B2-466, 4418-P[14,6]. He
died at 3 Dain Street, Dukinfield.
