Harmen Post

Harmen was born in Weesp and baptised in the Netherlands Reformed Church in Weesp[1]

The noted Witness to the baptism was Willemijntje van Wassenberg, possibly his grandmother or maybe not (see My Earliest Post Family).

Harmen married twice.  His first marriage was with Margrietje van der Bult and they had, at least, 8 children together.

His second marriage was with Margarietje Zaal and they had, at least, 5 children.

Harmen's First Marriage

Margrietje (Grietje) van der Bult
was baptised on 6 October 1757 at the Netherlands Reformed Church in Weesp.  Margrietje's parents were Reijer van der Bult and Pieternelletje de Wit.  The Witness was Seijntje Voorhaar[7].  She was the second Margrietje since an earlier child was baptised with the same name in 1753 but, presumably died young.

Harmen and Margrietje were married on 24 November 1782 in the Netherlands Reformed Church in Weesp

entry from the Netherlands Reforemed Church, Weesp

The church entry above has several functions:- (1) it starts as an intention to marry - dated 9 November 1782,  (2) it records that marriage banns were read 3 times but the dates were not written - they would have been 10, 17 and 24 November,  (3) it records that they were married in this church (hier in de kerk getrouwt) on 24 November 1782[7].

Together, Harmen and Margrietje had 8 children.  Margrietje died just 3 years after their last child, Johanna was born.  She was buried on 9 October 1797 in the yard of the Weesp Church[3].  She was only 40 years old.

The cost on the left was for the gravedigger and the cost on the right was for the Church.

Harmen's Second Marriage

Harmen married a second time with Margrietje (Grietje) Zaal on 10 December 1797 only 2 months after the death of his first wife.  This would not have been uncommon in those days since although he was grieving, hed had 7 children who needed care while he worked so it was necessary to act quickly.  They also married in the Netherlands Reformed Church in Weesp[9].

No birth or baptism record for Grietje Zaal has been found but according to their Intention to Marry, lodged with the local court authority, she was born in Naarden[9].  A Margaretha Zaal, a Widow, is mentioned in the 1849 census of Weesp with an estimated birth year of 1774.  This ties in well with our Grietje.  She was living at the Achtergracht 70 at the time.  In the same house lived her son, Willem, his wife Aaltje van den Tweel and a number of their children[14].

Intention to Marry

Harmen and Grietje Zaal had, at least, 5 children.

No record of Grietje's death has been found but presumably she died in Weesp sometime after 1849 since she was living when Harmen died in 1845 and is noted in the 1849 census of Weesp[2,14].

Harmen worked as a Cobbler (in French - Cordonnier), Shoemaker and Shoe Repairer in Weesp between 1812 and 1822 and probably his whole life[10,11,12,13].

Passing On

Harmen Post died on 20 October 1845.  He had no occupation, not surprising at his age!.  He was living in his house at Middenstraat 175 in Weesp when he died.  He lived to the ripe old age of 91 years.  His death was registered by his son Willem Post[2].
